How we hire: precision hiring for IT roles

Hiring software engineers is often treated as a numbers game. Post the job widely, collect as many CVs as possible, and hope the right person is somewhere in the pile. It sometimes works, but it is slow, it frustrates candidates, and it puts a heavy load on the people who have to review everything.

We take a different approach, which we call precision hiring. The idea is simple: spend more time understanding the role, search more carefully, and present fewer candidates who actually fit. This article explains how that works in practice.

Understanding the role before searching

Most hiring problems begin with an unclear role. A job title like “senior full-stack developer” can mean very different things in different companies. Before we start searching, we spend time with the hiring team to understand what the person will really do.

We ask questions such as:

  • What will this person work on in their first three months?
  • Which skills are essential, and which are nice to have?
  • Who will they work with, and how does the team make decisions?
  • What has made people succeed, or struggle, in this team before?
  • What can the company offer that others cannot?

The answers often change the profile. Sometimes a requirement turns out to be unnecessary. Sometimes a soft skill, such as being comfortable working with product owners, turns out to matter more than a specific framework. Getting this right at the start saves weeks later.

Searching where the right people are

The best candidates are often not actively looking for a job. They are working, reasonably happy, and not reading job boards. Reaching them takes direct, personal contact and a clear, honest description of the opportunity.

We combine our own network, targeted searches and referrals. When we approach someone, we explain the role, the team and the conditions plainly. We would rather hear “no, thank you” early than move a candidate forward who is not really interested.

Assessing real skills

CVs are useful, but they only tell part of the story. Two engineers with the same technologies listed can have very different levels of experience. We look at what people have actually built, the problems they solved and the decisions they made.

Our conversations with candidates cover technical depth, but also how they work: how they handle unclear requirements, how they give and receive feedback, how they explain a technical choice to someone who is not technical. Where the client wants it, we include a practical technical assessment designed to reflect the real work, not a puzzle that tests memory.

Presenting fewer, better candidates

Rather than sending a long list, we present a short one. Each candidate comes with our honest view: why we think they fit, where we see possible gaps, and what they are looking for. This lets the hiring team focus its time on serious conversations instead of filtering.

The final decision always belongs to the client. Our role is to make that decision easier and better informed.

Respecting candidates

Hiring is a two-way process. A good engineer is evaluating the company just as much as the company is evaluating them. We keep candidates informed at every stage, give feedback when we can, and try to keep the process short.

A candidate who is treated well, even one who is not hired, often comes back later or recommends someone else. A candidate who is ignored tells others about it.

Supporting the start

Hiring does not end when the contract is signed. The first weeks in a new role shape whether the person stays. We stay in touch with both sides during onboarding, so that small issues can be raised and solved early.

Why precision matters

A rushed hire can cost a team months of lost time, frustration and, eventually, another search. A careful hire usually takes a little longer at the start, but it pays back quickly in productivity and stability.
